Science Seminar: Fall 2003

Exotic Propulsion
Matt Shoemaker

The past century saw the sky ruled by airplanes and men landing on the moon. The dominant systems developed to conquer both air and space were jet and rocket engines. With the development of these systems currently reaching their practical limitations, the quest for new technology to carry the air and space travel for the next century is beginning. Several new theoretical systems are being investigated; from solar sails to riding a beam of laser light. One of these systems that shows the most promise for the future is pulse detonation. This new and exciting field of research holds the potential for changing air and space travel for everyone.
